Hip-hop pioneer Prince Po released an instrumental album in which he explained that he was intent on making an album that would relieve depression. Depressive disorders have been present since the commencement of recorded history. From a Judeo-Christian perspective, King David, as well as Job, each suffered from it.

In the ’50s and ’60s, depression itself was sub-divided into two categories, endogenous and neurotic. Endogenous connotes that the depression derives itself from within the body, perhaps of genetic origin, or comes out of nowhere. Neurotic or reactive depression has a clear environmental precipitating factor, such as the death of a spouse, or other significant loss, such as the loss of a job.

The high cost of everyday living can be one cause of depression. Mickey Boston, like Prince Po, would like to dedicate his album to those pinned by this ailment. Highlighting and underpinning the everyday struggle and the potential solutions to these very struggles may be viewed as melodically therapeutic.

Depressive illness can change the way a person thinks and behaves, and how his/her body functions. Some of the signs to look for are:

feeling worthless, helpless or hopeless.

sleeping more or less than usual.

eating more or less than usual.

having difficulty concentrating or making decisions.

loss of interest in taking part in activities.

decreased sex drive.

avoiding other people.

overwhelming feelings of sadness or grief.

feeling unreasonably guilty.

loss of energy, feeling very tired.

thoughts of death or suicide.

For some, hip-hop and music can become a form of relief. For others it may be religion and spirituality. In essence, there are means to overcome such afflictions. Moreover, some feel that a balanced diet of fruits and vegetables as well as increased sun exposure is a quintessential mix. Feel free to leave your suggestions…

Hi, I think more people need to seek the Word of God as a relief from depression. I believe that symptoms of depression result from trying to live in this world without the guidance of God. Moreover I think there is deep-seated guilt that people carry around because they understand on some level that they are living to gratify their selfish desires. I believe that the people in charge hand out pills to everyone to keep them pacified and stupified. The unpleasant feelings of depression mean something. Taking a pill in order to block those feelings is not healing. Those feelings should lead to kneeling before God almighty. The Word of God is power to uncover the evil within us, to cleanse us, and send us forward. Toward a life of serving God and serving others. Brothers need to help brothers. Don’t take the pills that are meant to kill the feelings inside us that are there to guide us to the light. Get into God and His Book and your lives will begin to feel right.
